Colorado Employment Law: Corporate Equality Index

Hewlett-Packard has been recognized as “one of the best places to work” based on sexual orientation non-discrimination policies, same-sex partner benefits, and other measures of corporate inclusion for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgendered (LGBT) employees.

HP received a 100% ranking on the “2013 Corporate Equality Index” released by the Human Rights Campaign. The Index is offered as a national benchmarking tool on corporate policies and practices for LGBT employees.

“A record number of businesses, spanning nearly every industry and major geographic area of the U.S., ranked as top scorers on this year’s Corporate Equality Index,” according to the Human Rights Campaign.  The Index, released each fall, provides an in-depth analysis and rating of large U.S. employers. 

In addition to scoring companies on their internal policies, the Index rates their “public engagement,” giving points for such activities as effective LGBT recruitment efforts; supplier diversity programs demonstrated to include certified LGBT suppliers; advertising to LGBT consumers; and demonstrated public support for LGBT equality under the law through local, state, or federal legislation or initiatives.

Recent estimates indicate that HP employs between 2000 and 3000 workers in Colorado.  Businesses interested in participating in the Corporate Equality Index are encouraged to contact the HRC Workplace Project at workplace@hrc.org. The Corporate Equality Index does not rate public sector (government) employers or businesses with fewer than 500 full-time U.S. employees.
